This was a fairly uneventful weekend...most of it was sleeping :D - I'm still kinda sick, so I've been chugging my robitussen like no tomorrow to make sure I have a voice for my oral test. I'm still having a bit of an artist's block, but I'll get over it, I suppose. I might post again later on tonight with something more fun than this : )
じゃあ、また!!

Haha, this one's a quickie.
I've had a wicked artist's block over the past week or so, and I need something to get me out of my slump. If anyone wants to request any type of drawing, then just comment here : ) It can be anything from a picture of you to an icon for your blog or a drawing of your favorite manga character (as long as you provide references for the last one!!) It'll probably be a pencil and/or pen sketch : )

I'll see ya'll tomorrow~

For anyone going to Spirited Away tonight, I'm planning on heading over there at around 6:43 or so (it's in DPAC, so it's far away~) I'll meet you outside DPAC before 7! If you have any problems, just call me (813-391-8300). They usually start pretty promptly, so try to be early! If it's past 6:55 and I'm not there, go ahead inside - it's on the second floor, in browning. theater. So far I know that Ariko-san, O'Malley-san, King-san, Ninneman-san, De Castro-san, and (maybe?) Shannon-san are going (if everything works out right and homework is done, right? XD)
じゃあ、また! See you tonight!

SPIRITED AWAY!!

こんにちわ!
This isn't my weekend homework-post!
I just wanted to tell you guys - the Film Society (a class I'm in that shows movies on Sunday nights at 7 pm) is showing Spirited Away this Sunday!!! I asked the professor and even though technically non-students aren't allowed to come, they can anyhow.
SO- if you wanna come to Spirited Away on the BIG SCREEN IN DPAC~ this Sunday, just comment on here! I only commented on a few people in Section A's blogs who I know like anime, so I'm sorry if I didn't comment on yours! (I have to leave for classes : ( )
じゃあ、また!

Art Post

I decided that I might as well put up some of my art this morning (since I have nothing better to do until my hair dries out a little):
The first one is to give you an idea of how my show was set up. I had a fairly long hallway (and needed it!) There were two large windows on either side of the large middle insert pictured here. That middle piece:

Is my absolute FAVORITE~ I don't know if you can tell from these, but it's roughly 4x5 feet, maybe a little more...and the prints (which are actually reeeeaaaally detailed, but you can't tell from this pic) are bolted between two sheets of plexiglass. The whole thing turned out just like I wanted it to.
Here are just a few misc. pieces:

Haha, this one is HUGE HUGE HUGE it's more than 1&1/2 times my height (almost twice my height!) and really wide as well, I did it on cardboard with acrylics, pastels, and tracing paper (thats why the box is white!) and I actually had to tape this piece to the floor to work!

In order, clockwise, those last four are: an 18x24 painting in gouache with gum arabic over the birds - I don't know if you can tell, but all those black marks are language charactes; an 18x24 marker and pencil; a 33x22 monoprint of stephen colbert (took forever!) and a pencil illustration from part of my best friend's book. That rendering I did from my head, which is why it looks a little wonky.

That's about enough for right now. Gotta go dry my hair~

First post!!!

Hello everyone! I'm Jackie, or koo-ka-burra. I usually use livejournal for blogging, so blogspot is new for me! This blog is mainly to catalogue my experiences in first-year Japanese at the University of Notre Dame! I'll use primarily English until I expand my Japanese vocabulary.
I'm an American hailing from Tampa, Florida - how I ended up in chilly South Bend no one will know.
I plan on majoring in art studio and anthropology (specifically a BFA in art studio, with a focus on drawing.) I love storytelling with art - you know, animated movies and the like. Hopefully I will one day be a designer / storyboarder for an animation company! Anthropology, though it may sound odd, really completes my ability to design characters, stories and worlds- to know their background, their psychology, their philosophy about life and survival. It clicks, weird as that might sound. I might post some of my art on here in the future (if I can get my camera working).
I (like a considerable number of Japanese students) first decided to learn Japanese because of anime/manga. However, I've drifted away from manga somewhat simply because I don't have enough time for it anymore. I have, however, become fascinated with Eastern philosophy/spirituality, especially Taoism. I first discovered Tao through Benjamin Hoff's book The Tao of Pooh. The concept of P'u, the Uncarved Block, as well as the Wu Wei explained to an incredible degree my own personal philosophy - to live without doing, causing, or making - to live without fretting about every little thing - it's brilliant. I can't describe it much more than that, or else it would Confuse things.

Hopefully that's a good enough post for now - I'm sure I'll update this a few more times before Thursday...
